The American beer scene has evolved tremendously in the last decade. The 2010s will always be remembered for the rise of craft beer and the invention of new, exciting flavor profiles. With a new decade dawning, it's worth considering the ways the beer scene will continue to grow and change in the 2020s. Here are three trends we anticipate making waves this year:
Fruited Sours The latter half of the 2010s beer scene was dominated by a single style: the IPA. While this beloved beer isn't going anywhere in the 2020s, consumer tastes are shifting towards fruited sour brews. Tart acidity helps sours stand out from the pack, but fruit flavors help balance out the profile for a truly unique and highly drinkable beer. Crisp and refreshing, fruited sours will only continue to gain popularity in the coming year. Fresh Hop Brews Americans are more tuned into the ingredients in their food and booze than at any other time in history. As a result, we're eager for the freshest possible ingredients. Hop acreage in the United States has increased 80 percent since 2012, so there's plenty of good stuff to go around. Be on the lookout for an emphasis on fresh, locally-grown hops in 2020 beers. Atmospheric Taprooms Once upon a time, a basic bar and a few stools were all that was necessary for a successful taproom. Now, atmospheric, experiential taprooms are raising the bar and consumer expectations. You'll still find brewery staples like cornhole and trivia nights, but expect to see an increasing amount of craft nights, open mics and beer club meetings at your local taproom in the 2020s. -- Scott Safadi, Shared Palate LLC
